According to a release from Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, published 4 February 2026, officials from Japan and the Philippines have concluded negotiations, with the parties agreeing in principle on a new income tax treaty. The new treaty must be signed and ratified before entering into force and, once in force and effective, will replace the 1980 tax treaty between the two countries.
